Colors

Every color these seven brands make. All 18,635 of them.

A full deck per manufacturer: search by name or code, filter by family, sort by lightness or hue, and tap any color to see the closest equivalent in the other six brands. That last part is the one people actually need — somebody painted the house before you and all you have is a color name.

Read this before you choose

No color on this page is the real color.

Screen colors are approximations. Monitors vary, and paint changes with light, sheen and the surface under it. Always confirm with a physical sample before you buy.

These hex values are third-party approximations of physical paint. Nobody put a spectrophotometer on these cans to build this page — they are the numbers the manufacturers publish, or numbers somebody transcribed from their fan decks, converted to sRGB. That conversion loses information before it ever reaches your screen.

Then your screen adds its own error on top. A phone in the sun, a calibrated monitor and a laptop in battery-saver mode show three different colors from the same hex code. And real paint shifts again with sheen, with the light in the room, and with whatever is underneath it.

The only reliable way to choose a color is a physical sample: a large chip, or better, a drawdown — real paint rolled onto card stock, two coats, taped to your wall and looked at across a whole day. Juan brings samples when he comes out to write the estimate. Do not pick a color off a phone.

The classic case

Every brand has a Swiss Coffee. They are all different colors.

Every brand has a Swiss Coffee, and they are all different colors. Dunn-Edwards DEW341 is the warm creamy one most of Southern California means. Benjamin Moore OC-45 is a shade cleaner. Behr 12 is different again. And Kelly-Moore 23, which was the California standard for decades, went away with the company in 2024. Ask four people here for Swiss Coffee and you will get four colors. Tell us the brand along with the name and we will get it right the first time.

Search “Swiss Coffee” in any of the seven decks below and compare the values yourself. That is exactly what this page is for.

The decks

Seven brands, seven complete decks.

Ordered by how much we trust the data, not by size. The color data is not equally reliable across all seven, and saying so matters more than looking tidy.

Tool

Have a color and no idea whose it is?

The color matcher runs the other direction: you hand it a color — from a photo, a picker, or a hex code — and it tells you the closest color in all seven brands at once, out of all 18,635. It is the one to use when you are holding a throw pillow, an old can lid, or a photo of a wall you liked.

  • Search by name or codeType “Swiss Coffee” or “DEW341” and the whole deck narrows as you type.
  • Filter by familyWhites, neutrals, grays, greens, blues — fourteen families, worked out in CIELAB rather than from the name.
  • Find the equivalentTap a color and see the closest match in each of the other six brands, with its ΔE.

Where the numbers come from

Sources, and what we do not know.

The Benjamin Moore data comes from Benjamin Moore’s own website color data. The other six decks come from colornerd, a third-party open-source dataset. We spot-checked four of the seven brands against the manufacturer’s published values and they matched. One did not quite match, and two we could not check at all.

Every deck carries its own confidence note, and they say different things on purpose. If you ever see all seven described as equally reliable somewhere, nobody checked.

Names and codes

Colour names, codes and fan-deck numbers are the trademarks of their manufacturers and are used here only to identify their products. AJ Paint is an independent painting contractor — not a manufacturer, and not an authorized representative of any of these brands.

Screen colors are approximations. Monitors vary, and paint changes with light, sheen and the surface under it. Always confirm with a physical sample before you buy.

Kelly-Moore is not here

Kelly-Moore ceased operations on January 18, 2024, so there is no deck to publish. We still match its colors: bring a chip or a lid and we will pull that color in Dunn-Edwards, Sherwin-Williams or Benjamin Moore.
