The story

Where Behr came from, and who owns it now.

Otho Behr Jr. started the company in Santa Ana in 1947, selling linseed-oil wood stains out of the back of a station wagon. Behr is a Southern California company and still is: the headquarters sits at 1801 E. Saint Andrews Place in Santa Ana, about an hour up the freeway from most of our jobs.

In the late 1970s or early 1980s Behr began supplying a small Atlanta retailer called The Home Depot, which had opened its first stores in 1979. A specific start year circulates online but we could not verify it, so we are not going to print one. What is certain is that the relationship eventually became the entire business model.

Masco Corporation acquired Behr in 1999 as part of a roughly $3.5 billion stock-and-cash package covering five Home Depot suppliers. In 2021 Masco sold off most of its non-paint businesses and Behr became the core of its Decorative Architectural Products segment. Today Behr is a Masco subsidiary – NYSE: MAS, corporate headquarters in Livonia, Michigan – with operations still in Santa Ana. KILZ, one of the most trusted primer brands in the trade, is in the same family. The company marked its 75th anniversary in 2022.

Everything is sold through The Home Depot and homedepot.com in the US. That exclusivity is the whole strategy and the whole limitation at the same time.

Behr’s genuine achievement is that they made big-box paint good enough that professionals had to stop dismissing it. Consumer Reports has repeatedly rated their premium interior lines at or near the top of the category, which no other big-box brand has sustained. Marquee is commonly measured around 46 percent volume solids, which is Benjamin Moore Aura territory, at roughly half the price. That is a legitimate technical claim, not marketing.

The catch is reputational and structural. Most painters’ opinion of Behr was formed by Premium Plus, the budget line at the bottom, and that opinion then gets applied to Dynasty and Marquee, which are different paint. Meanwhile the Behr Pro i100, i300 and e600 SKUs sold at the pro desk are different products again from the shelf lines, and no customer can tell any of this apart.

Where it stands out

What Behr does better than anybody else.

  • They made big-box paint good enough that professionals had to stop dismissing it. Consumer Reports has rated the premium interior lines at or near the top of the category for years.

  • Marquee is commonly measured at about 46 percent volume solids, which is Benjamin Moore Aura territory at roughly half the price.

  • Marquee is the only paint here with an actual one-coat guarantee, limited to a defined set of roughly 350 colors.

  • Zero-VOC formulation reaches all the way down to the budget Premium Plus at under 5 g/L, which is broader low-end coverage than Sherwin-Williams offers.

  • KILZ, in the same corporate family, is one of the most trusted primer brands in the trade.

The honest ledger

Pros and cons, set in the same size type.

The cons are not buried at the bottom in small print. If a brand has a known problem, you read it at the same size as the good news.

Pros

  • Availability beats everything else here. About 234 Home Depots in California, most open 6am to 10pm seven days. Need one more gallon on a Sunday and you can go get it yourself.

  • The cheapest brand on this page at the entry tier, by a clear margin.

  • The premium lines genuinely perform. Dynasty and Marquee hold up in third-party testing.

  • One-coat coverage on Marquee and Dynasty is real on the guaranteed color set, which claws back some of the labor a cheaper paint would add straight back.

  • The Urethane Alkyd Satin Enamel is a legitimate bargain for trim at roughly half the price of Benjamin Moore Advance, if you have the cure time to give it.

Cons

  • Touch-up is inconsistent, and professional reviewers call it out specifically on trim, doors and hallways – which is the last place you want a repair to show.

  • The premium lines are thick. The standard description in the trade is that Marquee applies like honey. It drags on a roller, it punishes rushed rolling, and in heat it gets worse. That thickness is labor cost.

  • The film stays soft longer than it looks. Painters routinely report tape pulling the film when masking comes off on schedule, and gummy behavior on re-coat.

  • It is not a cabinet system. Professional reviewers say plainly that Behr is not designed as a true cabinet coating system – it does not have the hard cure and adhesion profile of Emerald Urethane, Advance or Aristoshield. We will steer you off it for cabinets every time.

  • Premium Plus Exterior visibly fades on south-facing elevations within about five years on saturated colors under Southern California UV.

Product lines

What to actually ask for at the counter.

  • Flagship$60–$70

    Dynasty

Flagship. The most stain- and scuff-resistant paint Home Depot sells, with a 10-year color-fade claim. Kitchens and high-traffic rooms.

  • Premium$50–$60

    Marquee

The one-coat-guarantee line, limited to a defined set of roughly 350 colors. High volume solids and very durable. Thick on a roller.

  • Mid-range$44–$52

    Ultra Scuff Defense

The value sweet spot and the line Home Depot staff recommend most. Scuff and mildew resistance for hallways, baths and kids rooms.

  • Premium$45

    Urethane Alkyd Satin Enamel

The best-leveling product Behr makes, for trim and doors, at roughly half the price of Benjamin Moore Advance. Needs 14 to 21 days to full cure.

  • Value$33–$43

    Premium Plus

Budget interior with a zero-VOC formula and the widest sheen range. Rentals, low-traffic, temporary. This is the line that earned Behr its reputation with pros, and not in a good way.

  • Creamy MushroomPPU5-13#CABDAF
  • Silky WhitePPU7-12#EEEBE3

How it scores

Behr across all 12 attributes.

The same score that appears in the comparison table, with the reasoning behind each one.

  • One-coat coverage

    4/5One-coat coverage: 4 out of 5

Marquee carries an actual one-coat guarantee, limited to roughly 350 colors, at about 46 percent volume solids. That matches Aura.

  • Color depth

    3/5Color depth: 3 out of 5

Large library, but saturated colors lose durability and fade faster.

  • Durability and scrubbing

    4/5Durability and scrubbing: 4 out of 5

Dynasty is genuinely the most washable paint Home Depot sells. Premium Plus at roughly 300 to 400 scrub cycles drags the brand down.

  • Easy to DIY

    3/5Easy to DIY: 3 out of 5

Paint-and-primer packaging and simple labeling lower the barrier, but the premium lines are thick and apply like honey.

  • Low-VOC options

    4/5Low-VOC options: 4 out of 5

Broad zero-VOC range including the budget Premium Plus at under 5 g/L, which is better low-end coverage than Sherwin-Williams offers.

  • Local availability

    5/5Local availability: 5 out of 5

About 234 Home Depots in California, open roughly 6am to 10pm seven days. The best emergency and top-up availability of anyone.

  • Contractor support

    2/5Contractor support: 2 out of 5

Behr Pro (i100, i300, e600) exists, but there is no pro-counter culture. Home Depot staffing, tint accuracy and service are inconsistent.

  • Warranty

    4/5Warranty: 4 out of 5

Limited Lifetime across four lines including the budget tiers, broader than competitors, plus the Marquee one-coat guarantee and the Dynasty 10-year fade claim.

  • Touch-up

    2/5Touch-up: 2 out of 5

Touch-up inconsistency is explicitly called out by professional reviewers, particularly on trim, doors and hallways.

  • Exteriors

    3/5Exteriors: 3 out of 5

Marquee and Dynasty Exterior perform, but Premium Plus Exterior visibly fades on south elevations within about 5 years under SoCal UV.

  • Trim and cabinets

    2/5Trim and cabinets: 2 out of 5

Professional reviewers state plainly that Behr is not designed as a true cabinet coating system. The Urethane Alkyd enamel is a genuine bargain but needs 14 to 21 days to cure.

  • Ceilings

    4/5Ceilings: 4 out of 5

Premium Plus Ceiling at about $23 a gallon is the cheapest useful option anywhere. The caveat is flashing risk under temperature swings.

Warranty

What the paperwork actually covers.

Limited Lifetime across four lines – Dynasty, Marquee, Premium Plus Ultra and Premium Plus – which is a broader footprint than competitors who reserve lifetime coverage for the top tier only. Marquee adds a one-coat coverage guarantee limited to a defined set of roughly 350 colors over properly prepared surfaces, and Dynasty carries a 10-year color-fade protection claim. As with every brand here, the remedy is replacement product rather than labor, and it is non-transferable.

Every lifetime warranty in this industry gives you a replacement gallon of paint. None of them pay for labor, and none of them transfer when you sell the house. We read all of them to check. A lifetime warranty that hands back a $60 gallon is not a meaningful remedy on a $12,000 exterior repaint – the workmanship warranty from your painter is the one that actually matters.

VOC and air quality

What the California air districts require.

Premium Plus interior is a zero-VOC formula at under 5 g/L, and the zero-VOC range reaches further down the price ladder than Sherwin-Williams manages – a genuine edge at the budget tier. The caveat is the same as everywhere except Benjamin Moore: the claim covers the base, and tinting into a deep base with conventional colorant adds VOC, so confirm the tint system if a spec requires verified VOC at the point of application. Orange County is under South Coast AQMD Rule 1113 and San Diego County under APCD Rule 67.0.1. Flats and nonflats are 50 g/L in both; industrial maintenance and rust-preventative are 100 g/L in Orange County against 250 g/L in San Diego. Behr is a registered brand under California PaintCare and the fee is collected at the register.
